Navigating on a scooter is not the same job as navigating in a car, and almost every map app pretends otherwise. Your machine is slower, it is legally barred from certain roads, and you are reading the screen in a half-second glance at a junction, in the rain, with gloves on. Get the navigation wrong and it is not just annoying, it points you at a road you are not allowed to ride on.
This is the guide I wish had existed when I started riding a small two-wheeler around Berlin. It explains what scooter navigation actually is, why a car sat nav fails at it, what to look for, and how the rules differ in the UK, the Netherlands and Germany. Full disclosure: I build Urban Rider, a navigation app for scooters and mopeds, so I am an enthusiast rather than a neutral referee. Everything here applies whichever app you end up using.
What scooter navigation actually means
Scooter navigation is turn-by-turn guidance calculated for a scooter or moped instead of a car. In practice it comes down to three things, and an app either does them or it does not:
- Vehicle-aware routing. The route only uses roads your vehicle class may legally ride. A 50cc restricted to 45 km/h is banned from motorways, so those never appear in your route in the first place.
- Real two-wheel arrival times. Estimates are built on the speed you actually travel, roughly 25 to 45 km/h in town, not on car speed. That is the difference between "8 minutes" and the 13 it really takes.
- A glanceable screen. The next turn, the distance and your speed, large enough to read instantly from a handlebar mount. Nothing else competing for your attention.
Notice that none of those are cosmetic. Why a car sat nav fails on a scooter
Riders usually discover this the hard way, and it is always one of the same four failures.
- It routes you onto roads you cannot use. Because the app has no idea what you are riding, it optimises for speed and points you at motorways, dual carriageways and fast trunk roads. You find out at the blue sign, then have to improvise a detour mid-ride.
- The arrival time is fiction. Calculated at car speed, so on a 28 mph moped every estimate runs short. Over a commute, or a day of deliveries, that error compounds into real lateness.
- The screen is too busy. Lane guidance, junction art and dense labels are designed for a dashboard at 70 mph, not a two-second glance on a bike. More detail is actively worse when you are exposed to the weather and the traffic.
- Avoid motorways is not a fix. It is the closest thing car apps offer, and it helps, but it is a preference rather than a rule. The app still does not know your vehicle class, so it will happily route you down other roads that are legally or practically wrong for a scooter.
I went through this specifically with Google in using Google Maps on a 50cc scooter, and tested the obvious escape routes in the Google Maps alternatives I tried for my scooter. Short version: the mainstream alternatives are good apps that share the same blind spot.
What good scooter navigation does

The rules that shape your route, by country
Routing is only as good as its understanding of local law, and the classes differ sharply between markets. These are the three that matter most to readers of this site.
United Kingdom
A road-legal 50cc moped is restricted to about 45 km/h (28 mph), and Highway Code Rule 253 states that motorways must not be used by riders of motorcycles under 50cc. Riders on a provisional licence with CBT and L-plates are also barred from motorways at any engine size, so a 125cc learner cannot use one either. Pass the A1 test and a 125cc gains motorway access. For a sat nav this means your route depends on both your machine and your licence, which is a distinction no car app makes. Netherlands
The Dutch split is the sharpest in Europe and it changes which lane you belong in. A snorfiets is capped at 25 km/h with a blue plate and may use the cycle path in most towns, though Amsterdam and Utrecht now push snorfietsen onto the road on many stretches. A bromfiets is capped at 45 km/h with a yellow plate and always rides on the road. Helmets have been compulsory on a snorfiets since 1 January 2023. Both are banned from the motorway.
Germany
German law is unusually precise: a Mofa tops out at 25 km/h, a Moped or Kleinkraftrad at 45 km/h on a class AM licence, and a Leichtkraftrad (125cc) at 80 km/h on A1. The pattern across all three: your legal road access is set by your vehicle class, and a navigation app that does not model that will eventually route you somewhere you should not be.
Setting it up on the bike
Good software still needs a sane setup. A few things make a disproportionate difference:
- Mount it properly. A handlebar or mirror-stem mount that puts the screen just below your natural line of sight. A phone in your pocket is not navigation, and a loose mount is a hazard.
- Set your profile once, before you ride. Choose your vehicle class in advance so you never think about it in traffic.
- Let voice do the work. Listening beats looking. With clear spoken instructions you can ride whole journeys barely glancing down.
- Put the next turn on your wrist. If you have a smartwatch, it keeps your eyes up and your phone untouched.
- Plan for power. Screen-on navigation drains a battery quickly; if you ride daily, sort out charging.

Turning on avoid motorways helps a little but does not fix it, because the app still has no concept of your vehicle class. On top of that, the screen is dense with detail meant for a car dashboard, not a quick glance at a junction.
